About the Tour

1 What is a dhow safari in Zanzibar?

A dhow safari is a full-day boat trip on a traditional wooden sailing vessel — the same style of boat Zanzibari fishermen have used for centuries. It departs from Fumba Village and sails into the protected Menai Bay Conservation Area, with stops for snorkeling, sandbank relaxation, a visit to Kwale Island, and a fresh seafood BBQ lunch on the beach.

2 What is a "local dhow safari" and how is it different?

A local dhow safari is operated by Zanzibari captains and crew who grew up on these waters, on boats they or their families own. Unlike large corporate operators, local crews offer personal groups, flexible pacing, direct pricing without middlemen, and 100% of your booking stays in the local Fumba community.

3 Where does the dhow safari depart from?

All dhow safaris depart from Fumba Village, on the southwest coast of Unguja island — about 30 minutes by car from Stone Town. Fumba is the closest harbor to Menai Bay, Kwale Island, and the Blue Lagoon. Read our Fumba Village guide for more.

4 How long is the tour?

The full-day tour runs approximately 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM — about 8 hours including sailing, snorkeling, sandbank, Kwale Island, and lunch. Hotel pickup (if requested) may add 30–90 minutes depending on your hotel location.

5 What is the typical itinerary?

Departure from Fumba Village → sailing into Menai Bay → snorkeling at coral reefs → Blue Lagoon swim → sandbank stop → Kwale Island walk (baobab tree) → fresh seafood BBQ lunch → sail back to Fumba. Exact timing can flex with tides and the captain's judgment.

6 How big are the groups on your dhow?

We keep groups small and personal — typically 6 to 12 guests per dhow. This means more attention from the crew, easier snorkeling in the water, and a more relaxed feel throughout the day. Larger operators often sail with 20–40+ guests per trip.

7 Can I book a private dhow for my family or group?

Yes. We offer private dhow charters for families, couples, honeymooners, and small groups who prefer an exclusive experience. Message us on WhatsApp to discuss a custom private itinerary that fits your schedule and needs.

8 Is the dhow safe?

Yes. Our dhows are traditional wooden boats maintained to maritime safety standards. Every tour includes life jackets for all ages, a first aid kit, and a trained crew. We monitor weather and sea conditions before every departure. We have been operating safely since 2010 with a spotless safety record.

Booking & Payment

9 How much does a Zanzibar dhow safari cost?

Our all-inclusive full-day dhow safari starts at $85 per person. This includes snorkeling gear, life jackets, seafood BBQ lunch, tropical fruits, soft drinks, and park fees. Booking direct avoids agent commissions, so you pay less than the same tour booked through a hotel or international platform.

10 How do I book directly with a local operator?

The easiest way is to message us on WhatsApp (+255 772 425 433) or use the online booking form on our homepage. Booking direct means no middleman, no commission markup, and a real person answering your questions before you pay.

11 Do I need to pay a deposit to book?

No. We do not require prepayment. You pay in cash or by mobile money on the day of the tour. This is standard practice for registered local operators in Zanzibar. Anyone demanding full prepayment before the day of the tour should be treated with caution.

12 What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash in USD, EUR, and Tanzanian Shillings (TZS), as well as mobile money (M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money). Payment is made on the day of the tour.

13 Can I cancel or reschedule my booking?

Yes. If you cancel or reschedule before the tour departs — for any reason including bad weather or an emergency — there is no penalty. Once the boat has departed, a small fee may apply to cover non-refundable costs (permits, entrance tickets, food prepared in advance).

14 How far in advance should I book?

In high season (July–August, December–January), we recommend booking 2–3 days ahead. In low season, you can often book the day before. We do accept last-minute bookings via WhatsApp whenever there is space on the boat.

15 Do you charge for children?

Children under a certain age often travel free or at a reduced rate. Contact us on WhatsApp with your children's ages and we will give you an exact quote. Life jackets are provided in all sizes.

What's Included

16 What is included in the dhow safari?

The tour includes: sailing on a traditional dhow, snorkeling at Menai Bay reefs, the Blue Lagoon, the Menai Bay sandbank, a visit to Kwale Island, fresh seafood BBQ lunch (fish, lobster, prawns, calamari), tropical fruits, soft drinks and water, snorkeling gear (mask and fins), life jackets for all ages, and park fees.

17 Do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear?

No. We provide masks and fins in all sizes, free of charge. If you have your own mask and prefer to use it, you are welcome to bring it. We do not provide wetsuits — the water is warm enough year-round.

18 What should I bring on the tour?

Bring swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a towel, water shoes or sandals, a waterproof bag for electronics, and a camera. A light long-sleeve shirt is useful for sun protection. We provide all snorkeling gear and life jackets.

19 Are the park fees included?

Yes. All conservation and entrance fees for Menai Bay Conservation Area are included in the price. There are no hidden fees — what you see is what you pay.

20 Is hotel pickup included?

Hotel pickup is not included in the base price — it is available for an additional fee that depends on your hotel location. We offer private pickup and return from anywhere in Zanzibar. Contact us on WhatsApp for a quote.

Safety, Kids & Non-Swimmers

21 Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes. Life jackets are provided in all sizes for children. The shallow, calm water at the Blue Lagoon and sandbank is perfect for kids. Our crew is experienced with families and assists young swimmers in the water. The tour is best suited for children aged 3 and above.

22 Is the tour suitable for non-swimmers?

Absolutely. Life jackets are provided for all guests, and our crew assists non-swimmers at every snorkeling and sandbank stop. You can also stay on the dhow if you prefer not to enter the water — the views and the food are still worth it.

23 Is the tour suitable for elderly travelers?

Yes, with a small note: boarding the dhow involves a short walk on the beach and a step onto the boat. Our crew assists elderly guests on and off the boat. Once aboard, the ride is calm and comfortable. If you have mobility concerns, let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

24 Do you provide life jackets?

Yes — life jackets for all ages are always on board and mandatory. This includes adult sizes, child sizes, and toddler sizes. Our crew will help you find the right fit.

25 What safety measures are in place?

Every tour includes: life jackets for all guests, a first aid kit, a trained crew, weather monitoring before departure, emergency communication with port authorities, and small group sizes for personal attention. We have been operating safely since 2010.

26 Is there a first aid kit on board?

Yes. Every dhow carries a first aid kit and the crew is trained in basic first aid. If you have a specific medical condition (asthma, diabetes, allergies), please let us know when booking so we can plan accordingly.

Logistics & Pickup

27 Do you offer hotel pickup and drop-off?

Yes. We offer private pickup and return transfer from anywhere in Zanzibar — including Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani, Kiwengwa, and Pwani Mchangani — for an additional fee. Cost depends on your hotel location. Contact us on WhatsApp for a quote.

28 How do I get to Fumba Village on my own?

Fumba is about 30 minutes by car from Stone Town, 45 minutes from the airport, ~1.5 hours from Nungwi/Kendwa, and ~1 hour from Paje/Jambiani. You can take a taxi or private car. See our Fumba Village guide for detailed directions.

29 Can you pick me up from my specific hotel?

Yes — we pick up from any hotel or guesthouse in Zanzibar. Just tell us the name of your hotel and your room location when booking. Our driver will be at reception at the agreed time.

30 What time is pickup and drop-off?

Pickup is typically between 7:30 AM and 8:15 AM depending on your hotel location. Drop-off back at your hotel is usually around 5:30–6:30 PM. Exact times are confirmed on WhatsApp one day before the tour.

31 Can I meet you at Fumba Village instead of pickup?

Yes, absolutely. Many guests meet us directly at Fumba Village harbor. Just tell us when booking so we know you are arriving on your own. We will send you GPS coordinates and clear directions.

Food & Drinks

32 What food is served on the dhow safari?

A fresh seafood BBQ is served on the beach at Kwale Island — featuring fish, lobster, jumbo prawns, calamari, and grilled vegetables. Fresh tropical fruits (mango, pineapple, watermelon, banana, papaya) are served alongside. Soft drinks and water are available all day.

33 Can you cater to vegetarian, vegan, or dietary needs?

Yes. We offer vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and chicken-only options on request. Please let us know when booking (at least 24 hours in advance) so our cooks can prepare accordingly.

34 Are drinks included?

Yes — soft drinks (sodas, juices) and bottled water are included all day. If you would like beer or wine, you can usually bring your own; just let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

35 Is the food halal?

Yes. All food served on our tours is halal — prepared by Muslim cooks in Zanzibar. This is standard for local operators in Zanzibar, where the population is predominantly Muslim.

Weather, Seasons & Wildlife

36 What is the best time of year for a dhow safari?

The best time is during Zanzibar's dry seasons: June–October and December–February. These months offer calm seas, clear water, and excellent visibility for snorkeling. The long rains (April–May) can affect sea conditions, though many operators still run trips during the short rains in November. Read our month-by-month guide.

37 What happens if it rains on the day of my tour?

Light rain is common in Zanzibar and often passes quickly — many tours run as normal. If sea conditions are unsafe (heavy rain, strong winds, high swell), we will reschedule your tour at no cost or offer a full refund. Safety always comes first.

38 Can I swim with dolphins on the dhow safari?

Dolphins are frequently spotted in Menai Bay during our tours, especially in the early morning. When they appear, we slow down and let you observe them respectfully from the boat. We do not chase or harass dolphins, and swimming with them is not guaranteed — they are wild animals.

39 What marine life will I see while snorkeling?

Menai Bay is home to hundreds of species of tropical reef fish, sea turtles (green and hawksbill), moray eels, octopus, starfish, sea cucumbers, and occasionally reef sharks (harmless and shy). The coral reefs are protected and healthy.

40 Can I touch the coral or marine life?

No. Menai Bay is a protected conservation area. We ask all guests not to touch coral, chase marine life, or stand on the reef. Our crew practices and teaches responsible snorkeling to help protect the ecosystem for future generations.

Local vs Corporate Operators

41 Is a local dhow safari better than a large corporate tour?

Both visit the same reefs and sandbanks in Menai Bay. Small local crews offer personal groups, flexible pacing, direct pricing without middlemen, and money that goes straight to the local Fumba community. Larger operators offer bigger boats and structured schedules. Both are valid — it depends on your travel style.

42 How do I know a local operator is legitimate?

Ask for their BPRA business registration number, look for recent real reviews (Google, TripAdvisor), and make sure you can speak with a real person on WhatsApp before paying anything. Legitimate operators never demand full prepayment before the day of the tour. Our own registration is BPRA Z0000313934.

43 Where does my money go when I book with a local operator?

When you book with a locally-owned operator, your money goes directly to the Fumba Village community — to the captains, crew, cooks, and their families. You support local fishermen, boat builders, and small businesses, not an international corporate structure.

44 Why is a local tour often cheaper than a hotel-booked tour?

Because booking direct eliminates the middleman. When you book through a hotel, tour desk, or international platform, that intermediary adds a 15–25% commission to the price. Booking direct with the operator skips that commission entirely.

About the "Safari Blue" Name

45 Are you the same as "Safari Blue"?

No. We are Authentic Dhow Expeditions — an independent, locally-owned dhow operator based in Fumba Village. "Safari Blue" is a separate, well-known tour company operating in Zanzibar. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Safari Blue in any way. We simply sail the same protected waters of Menai Bay and offer a similar full-day experience, but with small groups and direct local pricing.

46 I searched for "local Safari Blue" — why did I find you?

Because many travelers search for the famous dhow safari experience using the name they've heard — "Safari Blue." When they can't find a "local Safari Blue," they often discover independent local operators like us who offer the same experience. We are a genuine alternative, not a copy — a small family-run crew from Fumba Village offering the same beautiful route with a more personal touch.

47 Is your tour the same route as the famous dhow safari?

Yes. All dhow safaris — regardless of the operator — sail into the same protected Menai Bay Conservation Area and visit the same well-known reefs, sandbank, Blue Lagoon, and Kwale Island. The route is regulated by the conservation authority. No operator has a "secret spot." What differs is the style, group size, and pacing.

48 If the route is the same, why should I choose your tour?

Three reasons: smaller groups (typically 6–12 guests), direct local pricing (no middleman commission), and 100% of your booking stays in the Fumba community. If you value a more personal, unhurried experience with a crew who grew up on these waters, we would be delighted to welcome you aboard.
